Gibraltar · British Overseas Territory

Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a slice of Britain on a Spanish rock: one small territory with the famous Rock, wild Barbary macaques, tunnels carved through the mountain and views across to Africa on a clear day. Easy to combine with Malaga or Cadiz.

Gibraltar, Gibraltar

Best season

March to June and September to November; summers are hot and the cable car queues grow long.

What it costs

Surprisingly pricey for its size, like the UK. Cable car plus nature reserve ticket around 30-40 GBP, fish and chips 12-15 GBP.

Getting there

Walk across the border from La Linea, Spain (you literally cross the runway), or fly into Gibraltar airport. Malaga is 1.5 hours by car.

Getting around

The territory is 6 km long - walkable, with cheap local buses; the cable car covers the top of the Rock.

Highlights

  • The Rock of Gibraltar and its Barbary macaques
  • St Michael's Cave
  • the Great Siege Tunnels
  • Europa Point with views of Morocco
  • Main Street duty-free shopping

Local tips

  • Bring your passport - it is an international border
  • do not feed or touch the monkeys
  • start the cable car before 10 am to beat cruise crowds.

What to eat

  • Proper fish and chips on Main Street
  • a full English breakfast
  • calentita, the local chickpea flatbread.

Where to stay

  • Most visitors day-trip from Spain
  • on the Rock itself, hotels near Ocean Village marina.

Sample itinerary

One full day: cable car up at opening, macaques and St Michael's Cave, walk down via the Siege Tunnels, lunch on Main Street, Europa Point for the Africa view before crossing back.
